It was always difficult to precisely put your finger on it and explain what happened to you.

Perhaps some of your trauma or abuse was overt and explainable, but the foundation of the culture you grew up in was daily toxicity.

Your parent was either praising you and making you “the special one” or they were rejecting you and criticizing you at every turn. As a kid, you desperately wanted to get it right by them. So, you became a star student, athlete or teacher's pet. You went above and beyond to prove to your parent that you were worth their love and care.

When you failed, they had this way of distancing themselves from you and so you learned it was unacceptable to fail in their eyes.

This lesson has driven the remainder of your life so far and now that you’re grown, you see it more clearly and you want to reorient yourself to your own sense of self and esteem. But the more you try, the more you find yourself lost and disappointed. You keep returning to their metric of success in order to try to feel that sense of gratification. The more you try to please them, the further you get from your own dreams.

This way of living isn’t working for you anymore.

If you continue to use your critical parent as a measure of your own worth, you will continue to struggle to connect to yourself and the ones you love the most.

You don’t want to sabotage the life you’ve created; all those boxes you’ve checked. And yet, you are unhappy and dissociative.

You don't know where to turn to get past those impossible expectations and beliefs.

You thought that the spaciness or dissociation you’ve been experiencing since you were young would have subsided by now.  You’re trying to get your career going and there’s a big part of you that’s up for the challenge, if only the effects of your trauma history wouldn’t get in the way. You want intimate connection and yet every time you get close to someone, you find yourself spacing out and pulling back. You’ve had some success in relationships, but you continue to struggle with flashbacks, memories, intrusive thoughts or you just find yourself floating through life and not feeling what it’s like to be in your body.

You are a survivor.

You endured the experience of having a parent with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Maybe you’re not sure what is considered trauma. Maybe you now gaslight yourself just like your parent did to you. Is it really real? Was it really that bad?  You ask yourself these questions and find that inner critic telling you to get over it or to move on. And yet, those old tapes about needing to idolize your parent keep playing. You find yourself confused and angry. You have become your own worst critic.

I see you.

I’m so sorry that you’ve had to survive through all this.

You deserve the freedom to thrive.

I have a deep understanding and experience helping people who have this type of critical parent.  I am specially trained to help my clients overcome Narcissistic Abuse or other types of emotional abuse from parents who are critical due to their own trauma. You are not alone. The phenomena of generational trauma is real and it becomes a daily struggle for most who have gone through it. I help women and people like you to find your own center, grow your own connection to yourself and learn to trust yourself so that you can expand into the life that you deserve.
